Homebrew CAI and few other minor mods
I mostly agree with willdikem66 and 08hemi1500, generally speaking 4" isn't going to get you anymore than 3". Possibly if you have a full blown race setup with some killer ram air, you might be able to cram some more air if you have a 4" over a 3", but other than that, i don't think you will see any benefit for 4" over 3". Especially I would think that a smooth bend would restrict air less than a couple of 90's, from a fluid dynamics standpoint, 90's kill your airflow.
I agree with 08 and willd as long as we're talking about a nornally aspirated engine. I'd say the factory determines the size of the TB based upon the ability of the heads to flow a certain amount of air and fuel. If the valves wont let but so much through, then trying to add more is probably a waste of time. Of course when you compress the air, the engine will then be able to take more volume of air through the same size opening, at which time you need to add more fuel also.
So yesterday I got a little antsy and decided to go ahead and make my homebrew "C"AI. Rounded up some parts from the big orange warehouse and picked up some paint and filters from the parts store, this is what I ended up with, fun to make and came out nice I think.

I also decided since I had the paint to do my hood struts

And, while I was at it with everything apart, i threw together a power wire and put that on. Finished up last night, drove it this morning, wow that rumble is AWESOME! Love it. Overall marginal gains at best I would say for power but the sound is pure heaven, can't wait till I get the exhaust I want. You can sure hear it sucking air now!

In terms of water, being more versed in plumbing, running water in a 3/4 inch pipe, then reducing to a 1/2" pipe would garner the same flow as a 1/2" pipe throughout. It might also create some back pressure as well.
Great job Ewing, I am going to buy a 3" sweep 90 tomorrow, with some ferncos. The TB side is a straight 3", is the Filter/flared side of the 90 a 4" fernco? Sorry if I missed reading it in your post if you mentioned it already.

Sounds easy enough! But i do have a few questions...
1. My engine bay looks dfferent than your guys?

2. I went to Home Depot and all they had was this

That would probably work too, but if you want the longer one, lowes sells them too. With the longer one you get the filter right over near the wheel well, which theoretically should help suck in a little cooler air. Right over top of the engine with that shorter one may be a little warmer. Either one would probably work though.
Good luck, post up some pics if you do it. Keep the trend rolling! We're gonna have to start a group here soon, haha.
I think your coolant box is a little different, but once you remove the hemi hat and the stock airbox, it will fit nicely down in there. I also installed a rafter hanger to help support the bottom end of the filter, but honestly it wasn't really necessary.
