Default Oil filter

Why is it every time I change my oil I have to use a screwdriver to get my filter off? I use the k&n filter

Only thing I can think of is you are putting it on too tight when you install. I have used K&N before but usually use MOPAR filters. They always tighten with use so they are harder to get off than they were to get on, but I can still usually remove mine with a pair of mechanix gloves on and without a filter wrench. But I install my filters the same way - I hand tighten and then take a firmer grip with the gloves and tighten it. I always check for leaks afterwards and have never had one.

Did you make sure to lube the seal?

I use a 1" socket and ratchet on mine. I haven't had to hammer a screwdriver through a filter in a long time.

I know that's probably the typical method, but I never turn mine that much further after it's hand tight. My rule of thumb is basically to never put a filter wrench on a filter when installing. I turn it as tight as I can with my fingers and then I get a good grab on it with my hand and turn it a little more. And I can almost always get it off with my hands when it's time to remove it.

The only time I would use a screwdriver on an oil filter is to drain it before taking it off but I haven't had to do that yet. Do you run the engine a little first to warm up the oil? Maybe the heat would make it a little easier to screw off. I'm just spitballin here

I had a heck of a time taking the last one off that the dealership put on and I think it might be a combination of not oiling the gasket and tightening it on too much when the engine is hot. I can only assume that by using the drivethru lane the engine was pretty hot and allowed them to torque the filter on way too much. Once it all cooled off, things tightened up. When I put them on it's by hand as well and maybe no more than 1/4 turn with the strap if my hands are dirty. They never leak and I never have issues taking them off.

Thanks everyone for the replies.. I let it warm up before I change the oil.I also let it drain and sit for awhile before I refill could that be some of the problem?

I just go hand tight on. Some filters don't require the seal lube.
