Default selecting tires for stock 1500?

hey guys. well i am as usefull as a rock when it comes to tires so i ask for your assistance. iv tried to do some research on the forum here and other places but nothing is making sense to me.

iv got an 04 ram 1500 which i need new tires for. its stock other than being leveled.

so, what size tire should i be looking for? the stock wheels are 17".
im not sure if the width of the tire can change without getting new wheels or how big you can go while keeping the stock wheels.

so does anyone have any suggestions or guidance for me? im looking for maybe 33's or 35's? i know basically nothing. so any help is great.

thanks!

33's or even 34's should fit, height-wise, as 33 is the stock height on rams with 20" wheels. Mine is leveled with 34's and it is not problem as far as height. It is the width you have to be careful with. Click and read below:

ya iv read through that a couple of times. the stock tires are like 245/70r/17 i think. what would a 35" tire be for that size if i kept the width close to the same?

Pick a brand, like Nitto, BFG, or whatever. Go to their website and choose a LT tire and view the size/spec chart. It will show you the height and width for each size the tire is available in. It's going to be pretty close to the same for each size no matter which brand you end up buying. Look up your current tire size in the same chart for a reference point on the width. You can probably get away with a little wider, but the question will be how much.

I was reading over that one thread again and they said a relative width. On something like a 32 inch tire, would a 265 be a decent choice? Something like 265/70/17? Stock is 245

Are you buying from a dealer or ordering online? If a dealer, they should be able to tell you what will fit comfortably and most will be conservative about it. They generally don't care to sell you the biggest tire they can, they just want to sell tires period. And they know if they to too big and create a problem for you, they are just creating a problem for themselves. I am thinking with a level, on stock rims, you could go with LT285/70R17 or LT285/75R17. The 70 will be a little shorter but wider and the 75 will be taller sidewall and thinner.

I edited my post to finish my thought. I went to the Michelin site as an example. In the LTX A/T2 tire, a P245/70R17 is 30.6" tall and 9.8" wide. The same tire in LT265/70R17 is 31.7" tall and 10.7" wide, so about an inch in each direction bigger than the 245. The LT285/70R17 is 32.8" tall and 11.5" wide and it recommends a rim width of 7.5 - 9 inches. If you are leveled in the front, you should be able to handle the 285's height easily. According to the vehicle search on that site, the recommended tire size for a stock 04 Ram is 265/70R17 and since you are leveled, you should be able to go with the 285. People have posted here larger tire sizes than that on stock rims without even a level and say they don't have issues. Depends how much you want to stuff your fenders. I personally don't care for the stuffed fender look. Also, keep in mind, the taller tire you go with, the more your speedometer is going to be off. Mine is about 1 - 1.5mph off (faster than speedo indicates) with the tires I have now.
