To anybody who ever thought about buying a winch:
True, 90% of the store is chinese made, but nkyhemi is correct, this winch beat all but two American made winches in a very grueling test conducted by an off-road magazine.
It's my understanding that only two companies make winches in China so basically whether it's a Smittybilt, Rugged Ridge, Recon, Tuff Stuff, etc, etc, etc you are pretty much getting the same winch with a different sticker on it.
The only knock I'm seeing on the Chinese winches are the solenoids tend to heat up/burn out faster than the American (Warn, Ramsey) winches. If you plan to use your winch daily, for work, etc. I'd spend the money on a US winch, but for an the occasional stuck, I have no qualms with the one from HF for $300. A comparable Warn, even their economy line is almost $1000. Hell my 9500 lb. rated Warn Premium Series sold for $1100 when I bought mine.
Honestly, if I didn't have the Warn M8000 I took off my Jeep when I sold it collecting dust in the garage, I'd pick up a $299, 12000 lb. winch just as a spare in a heartbeat...

It looks damn near like the 12k warn winch that came on our tilt flatbed.
And I don't give an *** crack what or where a product is from. Granted I'll do my reviews and make sure that the product (such as this winch) meets the positive reviews enough to justify the purchase. Whihc in this case, it does. But when it comes to getting out of a jam, you'll use anything and everything. Hell one time I cut down a tree, cut it in half and used 12' of it as traction to get going.
Normally I don't cut down living trees but when in the back woods of Colorado and stuck after a random spring snow storm.. it's live or die and the tree died.
