Default 5.7 Keeping motor question

Last Saturday driving down the highway pulling my trailer the truck backfired and died. I got towed to the dealer and they said the Timing belt broke and I have no compression on 1st and 2nd cylinders. So I need a new motor since their is no core charge. So I am having them put in a new long block motor in with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. My question is should I keep the old motor it has 156,0000 miles on it? Is it worth rebuilding or does it have any value the way it sits now?

What engine? Timing belt? Timing belts are found on 4 and 6 cylinder overhead cam engines not truck engines.

That all depends how much physical damage was done when the chain went.

You can purchase a total rebuild kit, and I'm talking total - all 8 cylinders, all gaskets, new timing set, etc. for not much over $1000.

I guess the other thing would be labor, if you can rebuild it yourself or have to pay for the labor.

I did a total rebuild of a 4.7 HO in my old Grand Cherokee a few years ago, had about $2000 in it total. Only labor I paid for was to have both the heads rebuilt...

I have always wanted to learn how to rebuild a motor maybe this the perfect time to learn how to do it. I don't want to leave the block at the dealer. Even if I did not rebuild it I am sure the block has some resell value.

Oh man, if I actually had a garage, I'd be doing a rebuild on that, even if it took me a few years and a few tries! If you have someone that knows what they are doing and can learn ya a thing or two about it, I'd go for it, personally.

Probably not as much resale value as you might think. In the long run, you'd probably end up scrapping it.
