Those of you running Synthetic oil, how frequently do you change your oil? I have been using synthetic oil for years and I have been told synthetic oil only needs to be changed every 7500 miles. I havechanged mine every 5000 miles but I am curious those that use synthetic oil how frequently you change your oil.

 

My 2-cents: (for what that's worth)

Synthetic oil is proven to maintain its lubrication qualities, long after regular (Dino) oil has quit. However, it still becomes loaded with dirt and byproducts of an internal combustion engine, and becomes acidic, and needs to get out of your engine.

I run Synthetic as well, and change it out between 4-5K with a new filter. Even at that point, it's dirty and yucky (official term) and makes me wish I changed it sooner, but in reality, it's still good oil, just is tainted with dirt. It goes in the lawn mowers after that....

 

5k is as long as I can stand to let it go

I plan onusing synthetic on my next oil change, I just got done with my last free one from the dealer. I plan on running mobil1 extended performance (one year or 15,000 miles). I planned on just changing themobil 1 oil filter every 4,000 miles and then changing the oil at around 12,000. Is this a bad plan or a wise choice?

 

Bad plan imo. When I had my Hemi I used mobile 1 religously, 4-5k max. I see it as cheap insurance. Napa gold filter worked nicely for me as well.

 

Thats my plan as well every 5k.

 

I bought a used 02 4.7 with 40,000 on it and changed to synthetic right away did the whole every 5,000 miles change thing blew the engine at 76,000ish after tearing down the old engine and seeing the built up deposits it was aparent that the old owner did not take care it properly. so after replacing everything from the rad to the engine ($7,500)i change it every 3,000 miles why take the chance?

I would say that alot of it depends on your driving habits also. Using Mobil 1 extended performace can get you an easy 7500 miles if you dont do a lot of stop and go.The purpose of the oil for all of us is to keep all moving parts lubricated. If your engine runs hot (stop and go.. stop and go) or lots of towing or heavy loads, I would never let it go that long. If you have mostly leisure driving highway speeds I would go between 5000 and 7500 miles. Even the manual sugests every 6000 miles under schedule A.

 

I change it every 3-4 months with mobil 1, and I have yet to hit 3000 miles in that interval. I have lots of city driving though, and I'm sure that I am probably playing it overly safe.
