20" spare tire switch - anyone tried?
Hi folks,
As some of you know I ended up with a bunch of tires low on air. It just kind of got me thinking, has anyone actually had a flat and been forced to change out one of these 20 inchers on the highway?
I ask because, quite frankly, I'm not sure how you would go about it.
Those rims weigh a ton!!! (ok, not an actual ton, but you get the idea)
If you crawl under the bed of your truck and unscrew the 20" tire to release it, won't you get squished???
I heard GM's used a "lowering crank" of some kind for their spare tire.
Just curious if anyone has tried....

If im not mistakin, i thought we had that lower system on our dodge's as well. Its gonna talk about it in the owner manual, or there might be a pic in where the jack is located.
Yes there is a lowering system. look just above the rear lic. plate and slightly to the right there is a hole that the handle go into to crank the spare down to the ground.
I actually had to change one at work because someone decided to steal 1 of my rims while I was at work. I got out of work and started walking towards my truck and noticed that someone had stolen my front driverside rim and left their Honda jack for me. What a good trade. Fortunately for me though they did leave the lugnuts or I would have been up sh** creek. But I also had someone helping me which made it a lot easier. And yes, the spare weighs a ton too.
I had to change to the spare once when apparently a nail that was in the RR Tire decided to work it's way out and leave me with a flat. Wasn't really a problem changing it - but I had a good laugh when my sister-inlaw that was riding for the first time in the truck decided to get out and see if I needed some help. Well on the way out of the truck she missed the step and fell head first, tumbling and rolling down the hill on the side of the road. All I heard was "oop!", and at a glance I watched her goooooo. Was cute, had to see it.

Then inquired to roadhazard coverage on the tires and NOPE, there isn't any that comes from the dealership. Sorta makes me mad, only 3 weeks old and had to either buy another $160 tire or plug it for $5. So, I plugged it. Guy at a goodyear store said I could come buy it for $11.50 a tire, but I still haven't yet. The Caravans have Roadhazard on them but not these big tires.
