If CAI's are to be modded
the key thing
is to check the MAP (manifold absolute pressure)
and IAT (intake air temperature) sensor
before the mod,
then after.
An improved CAI will make the pressure go up
and the air temperature go down.
Really good stopwatches can be bought for as little as
$8 today and timing a rolling start acceleration from
2000 rpm to 5000 rpm should be done before and after.
Even better would be to do this with 1500 lbs added to
the bed and up a steep hill...to make the time longer
so that small differences show up.
However, most CAI modd'ers just go by the noise
and the infamously inaccurate 'butt dyno'
For the same money or even less
finding ways to lighten your pickup (battery, springs, bumpers)
will give better results than any commercially available CAI,
and give 'real' improvements in acceleration and fuel economy.

Seriously dude, the attempts at debunking every CAI thread is getting old. Sound, fora lot of guys, is quite enough. Minimal, maybe even fractional improvements, even if only felt by each individuall driver is also enough to justify it for me. I love mine and would never go back to stock.
MexiRam, try it. If you don't like what you hear and feel then take it off and sell it. At least you'd get a little money back. And for all the homebrew CAI guys, work with what you got. It's your truck and only you can feel what happens when you push on the pedal. Don't let some guy on the intarwebs tell you how your truck performs.

ok i asked this in another CAI thread but it got pushed down the list.............can't i just buy "replacement" tubes and "replacement" filters to build a CAI for about fifty bucks cheaper than buying a kit? i've seen the tubes and they seem to come with all the fittings and hardware, the filter is just held on by a hose clamp. what do you guys think?

I'm not big on internet bashing or "making polls" about somebody. It is his opinion and this is the proper place for people to share opinions. I'm just tired of people who pose their opinions as downright fact, even if unintentional.
Do what you want to your truck, get otherpeople's opinions and help. But if you feel that you have to defend what you've done maybe you should've put more thought and research into what you did in the first place.
On the flipside, if you feel the need to "correct" everyone based on your own experience even though your experience may be completely different from theirs, then you should reconsider your position as well.
I'm all for differing opinions and diverse members, but tact shouldn't be thrown out the window just because you can't see who you're interacting with.
