My head unit is like that aswell, but I drove another ram, actually the identical twin to mine and it listed the channel, the name of the song and station and the bezel was a different color, it wasnt wood grain or silver but kinda grey with black specks.... It wasnt a nav unit either, it looked to be the same radio as mine.....
I LOVE the new system in my truck!!!!!! I now have a Pioneer HU. It has full control and charging for the iPod. It has direct connect Sirius, no more fm modulator. For both the iPod and Srius, I can set the display to show whatever I want, date/time, channel name/number, artist, album, song name, the list goes on.
I replaced the stock speakers and added a 4 channel amp. The installer (Car Tunes in Largo, FL) did an outstanding job. The amp is hidden under the rear passenger side seat in the small storage bin. The iPod cable is routed over to the glove box so the iPod stays out of sight. This is handy since everything on the Ipod is conntrolled from the HU and you don't need access to the iPod at all, except to remove it.
The sound is SOOOOO much better than the stock system. The music is very clear and crisp, much better highs and clarity.

It is a Pioneer Premier DEHP490IB.
There are a few display views you can select from. It can show the channel name, channel number, song name, artist, etc. It cycles through them when I press the "disp" button.
Here is a link that list the specs...
