Potential Buyer. 4.7 vs HEMI?? 3.55 vs 3.92?? Pricing?
My car is in the shop and I have been renting an 07 4.7 QC SLT and this is a great truck! I am seriously considering buying one, but I dont think I'm the typical RAM truck buyer. I like the truck because it sits high in traffic. For the ammount of power it has it is __very__ quiet and the auto is very smooth. Basically I'm looking for a nice relaxed ride for long commutes and weekends where I need to haul stuff. Being higher than every other car -- and most trucks is really relaxing -- and getting in and out is perfect for me because I'm tall and have a bad back. I also race shifter karts (for anyone who knows what they are) and need the abilty to haul a go kart on the weekends. Ive been using a trailer with my car to do this but can just throw the kart into the back of the truck.
So basically I'd be getting it because its like a HUGE car that can haul stuff on the weekends. Also it looks badass!
Now there are big incentives to buy. $6000 Cash back, and the dealer knows I am serious and is giving me 1% over invoice. I cant get into a large vehicle this nice for this little $$$ unless I was buying used. The dealer has a 4x2 QC 4.7 Thunderroad which is around 23K. (Auto, power seat, 3.92, other stuff ) Is this a decent price? These are the options I think I want.
I test drove a HEMI and frankly it didnt seem much if any faster than the 4.7. The HEMI is louder and feels rough in comparison. The HEMI really feels like a truck, the 4.7 feels like a car and has a nicer exhaust note. I know this is a silly question, but how much faster if any is the hemi 0-60? Or is all the extra power just for hauling? I think the 4.7 is high 7s, low 8s.
Also, I have been getting about 19-20mpg in the truck with the 3.55. How much will milage suffer with the 3.92? Also, is anyone getting this milage in the HEMI? (I read the milage thread and guys with the 4.7 seem to be getting ~2-3 better mpg.) I know that doesnt seem like a big differnce, but if I can get 20mpg in a 4.7, thats only 3 less than my car. 14-15mpg really is a gas hog.
If the milage is the same and the HEMI is significantly faster, I'll pay the extra 1K for a HEMI, but my butt dyno said that the differnce in power wasnt really helping in 0-60. (Max tourque on the 4.7 hits at a lower RPM.) I have no way to know about the milage because ive only been driving the 4.7.
Also, is the redesign coming in 08? Is that why the 6K incentive? Should I hold out for a better deal?
Thanks!

If you can wait one model year
the 4.7 V8 is about to get a major upgrade:
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/47.html
Fuel economy is supposed to be up 6-8%
along with the hp and torque increases.
Downside is that the first year of an engine
usually turns up a few bugs

I'd get the hemi. The fuel economy is the same, lower mechanical complexity, more power, and the MDS. If nothing else - the resale is going to be better.
Having said that, I've never been in a 4.7. The hemi is great if you don't tow alot. Personally, I wish I had the cummins...but that's a whole different reason.

I've got a 2005 Hemi with 50,000 and I'm still getting16 to19 city and 20 to 23 hwy. With the Hemi you actually get better milage, more power, and a 5 speed automatic. And when I bought mine the price differance was $730.00. Yeah I bought the Hemi. Plus the Hemi has a better resale value. The 3.92 gear is only for trucks with 20" wheels. Which in the winds up with a final drive ratio the same as the higher gear ratio. $23,000 is not a bad price. I paid 21,000 on a 32,225 sticker QC 1500 Lonestar Pkg with the Hemi. Hope this helps.

If you do not plan on puling anyting and you are not obsessed with power the 3.55's will done fine.
4.7 vs the Hemi, there is a big power difference in the 07 model, but if you feel the 4.7 suits you go for it. You can nopt go wrong. I also like how my 05 4x4 sits
