If it is not the Infinity system you can replace the door speakers and have improved sound right off the bat. If you have the infinity system, all you would need is a sub in the back. The Infinity system is the only one that has an external amp and it is located in the dash behind the glove box and passenger air bag.

The Infinity system in the Ram has an amp located behind the glove box. You have two 5 1/2 speakers in the rear doors, two 6x9s in the front doors, and three 3 1/2 in the dash. The regular system doesn't have the dash speakers.
If you don't have the Infinity system, a new head unit may wake up your factory speakers, but upgrading your speakers without an amp may not give you the sound you are looking for. I did mine one step at a time and I started with the Infinity system. The one in my Grand Cherokee sounded great, but the one in my Ram as well as my wife's 300M sounded lousy. I've replaced everything in the 300M including the amp.

First of all to the OP, we need to know what year truck you have and what kind of realistic budget you have. The big quesations I have is what is youre definition or cheap and your definition of upgrade?
As for pics of the OEM HUs in the Rams, you dont need pics, you just need to understand they all suck.
