What's your opinion of the 4.7?
i just got an 05 ram 1500 with the 4.7 a couple of days ago. so far i think its a pretty damn good truck for the price. the power is pretty decent, though i dont like the way the tranny shifts. it pisses me off when the torque converter locks up and it doesnt want to unlock when goin up a hill. yeah it doesnt get the best gas mileage, but its better than my 2000 ram 1500 with 6 inch lift, 35" tires, and a road armor bumper. i think the truck has alot of potential for performance, the only thing holding it back is emission regulations and a few "design" features. If i had the money and the time, i would get rid of the EGR, PCV, chip it, port and polish it, and run a decent cam straight through its heart. of course, the only issue with that is i either have to spend alot of money, watch an annoying MIL light everytime i drive, or put the truck out of service for a period of time. other than that, though, it gets me my fix for the day

LMAO You really think gears are gonna make up for a 110hp difference from your 235hp 4.7L to the 345hp 5.7L?
Unless you were to have the '08+ 335hp 4.7L you haven't got a chance.

I have an 04 4.7 QC with the 3.55's. Ive been driving the truck for a little over a year now, and it has 50,000 miles on it. I have a CAI, power wire, throttle body spacer and cat back exhaust.
I had a friend that needed his travel trailer pulled in a pinch. Dry weight on the trailer was 7,000, and the grey tank was full, and it had food clothes... and so on in it. The 4.7 did an excellent job pulling. As far as power, i would have been comfortable pulling a heavier trailer. With the assist of my brake controller, the ram stopped well, and towed it smooth all the way. BTW... I have 3.55's.
Sure HEMI has more power, and surely is a better tow vehicle, but the 4.7 holds its own.
4-7
PS... 13mpg in town, 19 mpg on the freeway

if you are purchasing a truck with an automatic you may as well get the hemi. because with the hemi you will get better power and not to mention since it's an automatic you want as much as you can because dodge autos suck ballzz and sap a ton of power due to being inefficient. not to mention a hemi truck isn't much more expensive.. like 1k.
Now if you compare the fact that the 4.7L especially the 08 version that puts out just a small 30 hp shy of the hemi and dodge will mate it up to a getrag 238 six speed manual.. now that's a set up that will put a wallop on a hemi. not to mention be more reliable. IMO i would have gotten a hemi but I just couldn't stomach buying somethign that I would know would need a new transmission before 100k miles. that to me is pointless. I can beat my truck all day long and go home feeling good about it if i want to. that getrag will never die.

you know another thing I want to add is, When i bought my truck i didnt have the luxury of really picking what i wanted, cause if i did, ive got to honest, i wouldnt have bought a gas motor. So if you really want to get in a pissing match about power and reliability, (although its almost apples and oranges) the cummins is a way better motor.
Either or; I bought my truck because i got a killer deal on it, and i needed to get out my jeep wrangler. I walked out the door on my truck, at the time with 45,000 miles, 4 year 85,000 mile ext. warranty, under 13,000. yes, its 4x4. show me HEMI at that price a year ago.

I can beat up my truck all day long too...it's called a warranty.
I can't compare my '08 4.7 to either prior versions of the 4.7 or the Hemi, having no experience whatsoever with either. I bought my first Dodge truck (after many Fords) for the sole reason that Dodge was the only manufacturer of a 1/2 ton V-8 powered truck with a manual, and the only V-8 offered with the 6-speed was the 4.7. I really don't care what others are driving, though I do hope everyone is happy with their rigs, but I must admit I think I have the perfect truck, and unless someone totals my '08, I'm driving it until the wheels fall off.
here's the thing i understand about a warranty. but to be honest why would I buy a truck that i'm going to have to deal with that? Why buy something that I know is going to break.. warranty or not it's a gigantic pita. if you're alright with having to deal with that then fine w/e but me personally I'm just not big on that.. i still consider it a bad mark whenever a vehicle needs to go back to the dealer for a fix. whether or not it's warrantied I will still make a mental note of it. not to mention the idea of some tech at a dealership doing serious wrenching on my own vehicle makes me queasy to begin with.. let alone them changing a transmission. when my truck threw a CEL had it been for something worse than "cold start rough idle" or something off the wall that indicated electrical problems.. i probably would have gotten rid of it by now. the new nissan z's have been on my radar for some time now lol. but luckily i'm just about at 10k with no issues.
and everyone likes to say for drag racing auto is better.. well duh.. let's see auto transmissions that true drag cars use cost more than our trucks do... that's two totally different things. notice i said nothing about all auto trans.. just the dodge 545RFE. which is known to be a hunk of garbage.
