What's your opinion of the 4.7?
I like mine. Its not a hotrod, but its got plenty of power and acceleration. Also, for the gas mileage, although I've only got 7k miles on mine, the mileage is going up. I'm up to about 16 now, which is better than my 5.0 Explorer ever got (12).
I just turned 12000 on my odometer. I have the 4.7 and have not had any problems with it. It has plenty of power and torque for me. I also have the tow package including the 3.92 gears. I think that helps with the power delivery some.
I have only had mine for six weeks, but like it so far. Had a 2000 AWD Durango with the same engine and had "0" problems.
It is a very modifiable engine.
I have the Flowmaster 50 Si/DO
Air Ram CAI on order
Air Ram Scoop on order
4.56 gears LS installed 10/12/04
Fast Man TB 68 MM on order.
My guess is that it will hang with a Hemi (total cost in mods approximately $1,000)

I love my new 4.7. It feels stronger than the Ford 4.6. My only complaint is the HORRIBLE gas mileage.

I've got 7k on my 2004 now and have not had a problem. The 4.7 has proven to be a wonderful engine for the single cab i have. It is thirsty, but i use my truck like a truck and have had 5-7k lbs. on it plenty of times and it can hold its own. I live in texas hill country so downshifting constantly is one of the few things i don't like about the 5 spd. transmission. It seems eager to downshift even though it is only floating around at 1-200 rpms difference in different gears. I spoke w/ a tech about it and said they all do it. I don't think it is hurting anything really besides my gas mileage. I'm just gonna make it a habit to change that tranny filter every 20-25k miles. The only thing i really dislike about the rams is the way the doors shut. It just doesn't "feel good", some say they don't notice it, but I do. If you don't want to spend the $$$ on the hemi, the 4.7 is the way to go. But don't think you are going that way for gas mileage. Every hemi owner i know gets as good as i get.
I had a 4.7L in my 2002 1500 Q/C. It ran ok, but overheated twice when I was towing my boat. I got 13mpg city with the 4.7L.
I traded it in for a HEMI and now I am getting 15mpg City and I have never overheated and I have WAAAAY more power.
To sum up, the 4.7L is worthless when compared to the HEMI.
