Help Choosing New Tires
I have a 2003 dodge ram 4x4 with the stock 17"rims (265-70r17 tire size). I bought these new alloy rims (20' by 9' 5-139.7)that came off a 2007 dodge ram 4x4.My question is what would be the best tire to get for my truck . I dont plan to do much off road. I would just like to get the best tire for performance without throwing all my speedo and gear ratio as much if i can avoid it. I would also like to have the same if not close to the same handling on the truck. The guy i bought the tire said the tires he had on there were 27560r20 these are the stock tires for the dodge 2007. Would i be able to put these same tires on my truck.Below are the pics of the rims i have now and the new ones too.Any suggestions would help.
Personally, I would have stayed with the 17's on a 4x4. I had to go to 3 dealerships when I bought mine just to find anything above a base truck with the 17's. I was told the Laramie pkg. I found with 17's was a rarity. I prefer more rubber, air & flex when off road. Just myopinion.
To answer your question, for the year and a half I drove at stock height, before the lift & 35's went on, I found I liked 33" tires. Handling was just as good as stock, speedo difference was minimal and the stock 3.92 gears worked well with them. I thaught that the 33" tires also filled out the tire wells just right. I'll include a pic with 33's at stock height to give you an idea.

I lready purchased them havent put them on yet, but if going to be too much hassle i will get rid of them.I like the way my truck handles now if its going to be too much diffrence for get it.
As a rule, I have found that 20" rims behave better on pavement, but the 17's have more advantage off road. I have alwaysfound Mickey Thompson & Dick Cepek (owned by Mickey Thompson) to be fantastic tires. The 33's I had were 33x12.5x17 MTX's, a true All-Terrain tire. Not real aggressive (although they never let me down off-road) and handled really well, and when I took them off and sold them with 28,000 miles they looked virtually like new. I now have 35x12.5x17 Dick Cepek Fun Country II's, a tire that is marketed as a hybrid betwwn All-Terrain & Mud Terrain. These are a bit more aggressive, yet retain excellent pavement characteristics, and seem to be wearing just as well as the MTX's. As I have a home in central Fl. and some farmland in south Ga., I travel a good bit on the interstate, and didn't want to invest in true Mud Terrains to tear up in a year and have to be replaced.
For true off-roading / mudding it's hard to beat the Baja Claw Radial, I have buddies in GA that don't have the time spent on the highway that I do, that swear by them, and the only tire I have seen really beat them in Ga. slop is Super Swamper's Boggers (which are vitually un-controllable on pavement).
