ASD- anti-spin differential?
A std axel directs power to the wheel with the less resistance. If both wheels have traction you notice nothing. If a wheel slips, all your power goes to the slipping wheel, so you won't move.
With an LSD, the power can be, for lack of another term, switched or split between wheels on either side of the axle. So, it a wheel slips, in theory, 50% of the power goes to the slipping wheel, and 50% goes to the wheel with traction to keep you moving. In reality, due to mechanical lose, it is less than 50%, however, the LSD will keep you moving.
They used to say that a 2wd with a locker or LSD, proper tires and clearancecould go just about anywhere a 4wd could go.

Thanks, do lsd last as long as a regular rear axle? So, when you loose traction with one wheel, the other wheel doesn't have as much power going to it. This keeps you from slipping down a fishing ramp?
Hmm, not sure, with proper maintenance, they should last long enough not to be a worry. I smoked a clutch LSD unit in my jeep years ago as I did not know there was an anti-foaming agent that was required when I changed the oil. Prior to this, the unit itself went bad. So, my luck with the old AMC LSD units has not been good.
The Dodge units from what I hear have worm gears rather than clutches, so no anti-foaming agent is required, and they should be much stronger.

I think it would be a good feature for my next truck because it can get slippery on a boat ramp. Just wondering about the durability and longevity of a lsd.

There are some problems with the "c" clips breaking off and causing them to be replaced. You may be better off just getting a truck without it, and then replacing it with an auburn locker. That locks both wheels, not just splits the power when it feels like it.
