Default tail lights

I have a friend with an 03 tundra that has the yellow turn signals in the rear. He saw on his tundra forum tha some one painted over their lights with a red candy coat paint that was translucent. The guy had gotten the paint from walmart in the model car section. So my friend and i put six light coats of red candy on his tail lights allowing for 15 minutes of dry time in between each coat. After those six coats, we noticed that the light matched the factory red light below it except that it was hazy and not glossy. I told him to go get acetone and put it on a smooth paper towel (a rag has grooves in it) and lightly wipe over the paint that was hazy. It did exactly what i thought and gave the tail light a glossy look, exactly like the stock red brake light located under what used to be the yellow tail light. Also, if you mess it up, the acetone will remove all of the paint off the light and return it back to stock (we had to start over twice on the second light b/c we rushed in between coats and didnt let the paint dry enough.) I was wanting to black my tail lights out and was wondering if any one has blacked out their tail lights using this method? I think i might try it and if any one decides to do this, make sure you take your light out of the truck when painting and using acetone.

You might want to test a spot on yer light assembly housing first to see if it will resist Acetone. I have seen guys make a mess of their lights cuz the acetone ate em up.

Did you consider painting them from the inside? I know that would require disassembly.

Sounds pretty cool though. I’d like to black out my lights.

Good luck Pakaalbite and remember take PICS heh.

since your going black instead of painting it have you thought about putting some dark tint over it?

just use window tint, one of my friends did it on his truck it looks pretty good, and that way you wont have to worry about the acetone wrecking anything either.
