Default Increased MPG by 25%

On Tuesday night I bought an 04 Ram 1500 RC/LB 4.7 auto with 39k. It barely got 10mpg. I knew I needed to look into it and check the obvious items, but work was in the way. I finally got around to checking the air filter and I almost puked.

I put a new filter in and alread my mileage is up to 12.7 on the traveler. I've only got a couple miles, so we'll see what happens next week.

Also I got to the track on friday night and ran a 16.63 @ 81.8mph. That was with the blocked filter! If I thought to look I would have taken it out. I think it's worth a tenth, maybe more. I don't know if I'll get to the track again before I put a flowmaster exhaust on, so I'm just going to save the filter and make a run with it in to see what effect it has.

I also have traction problems with the open 3.55's. I was thinking about a lock-right drop in locker.

David

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you bought that truck from my dad...

I just serviced his motorcycle and the airfilter was the original. He bought the bike new in 2000......[:@]

I'd agree, I have never seen a filter that dirty.

Mileage is now up over 13mpg city and climbing...

The filter was the worst that I've seen. I've pulled filters from the junkyard that have been better. Actually the filter that's in my 86 F150 came from the junk yard. The airbox was broke so I got a new one from the yard and kept the filter in it....
