Tonneaus can improve mileage ever so slightly. A soft cover will be better because it is lighter. The fiberglass cover are better at air flow, but add a good 150-200#, which reduces mileage. I wouldn't buy a tonneau just for the purpose of fuel economy. It will be negkigible.

In the Mythbusters show 'Myths Revisted'
where Adam mounted a Floscan Fuel gauge from a boat to his Dakota
they did find that tonneaus improved MPG
over either tailgate down (worst)
tailgate up (better than down)
tonneau (slightly better)
and fabric net with 1 inch square holes (slightly better than tonneau)

But Adam admitted that both he and Jamie were
'sick of doing pickup MPG tests'

In the more recent MPG tests
like on the Dodge Magnum drafting behind the 18 wheel truck
they have turned the testing over to Grant.

You can watch all the previous Mythbusters shows on your computer
by downloading the torrent files at:

I got a freedom cover by eXtang. I got about a 2-3mpg increase but I also installed it the same time I put a K&N filterin my truck and changed the oil to full synthetic.

If I ever get a cover, it will be just for that, to cover whatever I am carrying.
I tell you, anything you add to your car now save gas and improves mpg. What a marketing scam!
