Default Grinding noise in '02 1500 4x4

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with 85000 miles on it...just turned 85000 about two hours ago....anyways heres the story...

So today i was driving down the road and i started hearing a real bad grinding noise...i have no clue what it is, so far i have broken it down to the brake rotor, the rotor itself is scared but thats not the problem because there is nothing wrong with the brake pad itself...so i have no clue what it could be, someone at one point mentioned something about ball joints going bad but i dont know if i even have those...

some help on what might be causing the noise would be helped if any of you guys/gals out there have ever run into this problem

don't drive it. grinding is bad and it will do more damage somewhere.
you'll need to get it up on jack stands or something and rotate wheels and/or drivetrain to find the resistence and noise.
probably not ball joints. they are more likely to make a popping or clunking sound.
could be wheel bearings, brakes, diiferential, u-joints, transfer case, etc.

Sounds like its coming from closer to the rotor...like its coming from under the little dust hood...i think thats where the bearsing are but i dont know how to get to it....just take off the rotor?
