he is playing with you, He is saying if you have NO T.C. then their is no way to connect the engine to the tranny....[8D]
What vehicle do you have? what engine and tranny? the 5speed/multispeed auto for the hemi has an automatic lockup T.C. and you may not have to upgrade it... You need to elaberate MORE on what exactially you want to do soI can give you better advice on whatI've have experienced.... I had my tranny warrantied out a while ago and had bought an auto/manual T.C. Basically it is automatic but you can manually lock it up with a button i put on the dash... Good for drags but will kill the engine if engaged at a dead stop.... it is the same as letting the clutch out on a standard while your foot is still on the brake....

Are you adding a dry shot or wet shot of NOS? if its dry you run the chance of leaning out the engine, the combination of long tubes and NOS dry shot is going to be hard for the stock fuel system to keep up with.

As far as an artermarket converter is concerned, yes, it will heat up if kept below the lock up rpm, so get a converter that will be locked at cruising rpm. Lets say you get a 2500 rpm stall converter, but you cruise at 2200 rpm, the converter is in a constant state of slippage. This will lead to increased tranny temp.
Adding an additional trans cooler is a good idea with a higher stall converter
