I know of only one person with a 4.7 and she has not had a problem yet... it is an 03. I'm with Cobra, go with a hemi, you will be happier it is the same gasmilage or better with the MDS system in it. More power and MDS means less gas to make truck move. if your dad is dead set on the 4.7 get the 3.92 gears... or he will never be happy towing anything...

superROB23, I went with the 4.7, I have not got to drive it yet, 59 more days till I get back to the States! However my wife has driven it several times and says it has plenty of power. It does have the 3.92 gears. The 2003 4.7 has 240 HP stock, but the newer 4.7's are coming out with 300 HP stock, so they are making a lot of improvements on this engine. As for the mileage part, I got mine with 74,000 on it, I had asked around to some friends with Rams and was told that was not bad and those engines could go alot more. Hopefullythey were right and so far so good. No problems to report.

Mine's a long bed, reg cab 4x2 and I'm not even towing, or have a loaded bed and I think the 3.55's are wrong. It's one of the lightest versions you can get and while it moves pretty well, the gears are wrong. You can look in the glove box for the ratio. It will also tell you if it's an anti-spin rear or not. That's Dodge for a limited slip or "Posi" rear.
Oh, and as for HP. They're rated a 230 or 235, but if you do the math I ran a 16.63@82mph in a 5300lb truck with driver. That equates to about 290 flywheel HP.
