Default Tackling rear diff....

I've got a '02 1500 QC 5.9L with 131000 miles on her. When I bought her she had 114xxx mi. I've got the LSD rear end. Since I don't know if the previous owner stayed up to date with maintenance, should I change the fluid myself or have it checked out?

do it yourself for sure.....just take your time and be sure to look over everything...check the oil when it's out and see if theres any debris in there....make sure to put the friction modifier in it when you fill er up

Do it you'r self it's easy just use some highend gear lube CLEAN the Mating surfaces very well before putting the Inspection cover back on use some good sealent Don't be Cheep get the good stuff so you dont have to redo it the again.

I found for my self a wire wheel on a drill motor works very well to remove the old sealent from you old case and cover Use Brake cleaner to spray out the old oil and clean the inspection cover off use Paper towles to mop up the old oil out of the rearend case use ( Brake Cleaner leaves NO Fim- Like Carb Cleaner) I normaly clean the cases dry as I can before puting it back together MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL THE PAPER TOWELS BACK OUT BEFORE PUT THE COVER BACK ON. Use criss cross patren when reinstaing the inpection cover so you do not bend it use the step tourqe when installing the cover back on refill the Diif WITH Limmited Slip Fluid about 2 or 3 Ounces then fill the rest with gear oil untill it starts comming out of the fill hole then you'r done Its not hard it takes about 1 hour of work Hum it should cost you about $40.00 or $60.00 bucks for every thing thats on the high side use full Synthitc you get what you pay for.

If you bring it to a shop they put in any oil they feel like they mite tell you they put in the oil you wanted and payed for but most of the time the poor under payed and missed informed mechanic puts in there normal oil they use the most normaly standered oil, And you pay at least $30.00 a hour for the labor you know they are going to get you for at least 2 hours. ( I am a mechanic by trade my self lot of the time theservice writernever tells or puts on the work order theimpotant stuff needs to be done oh yea We forget the read the whole work order also Ha Ha).

Oh yea when you do drain the oil out of the rear end look at it hard for metal parts thats bad also look at the paper towels after you wipe out the cases look for any big parts of metal on the towel a little film and grim is normal.

If there is metal parts in the oil put some cheep oil back in it and take it to a shop and get read to fork over at least $700.00 and up to get it fixed.

Some others have told me to get you'r Limted slip to work for the best type posi is put about 1.5 oounces in fill the rear diff almost to the fill hole find a big parking lot and make tight circles with the truck if you fell the rear end chatter add some more Limted Slip fluid about .5 once put the plug back in do some more circles keep on doing this untill it go's away this will make you Limted slip kick in the best don'n forget after you get where you like it top off the oil untill it comes out the fill hole,Posi drifting isfun but it's hard on the tires.

My 9,25 rear end holds 3 Ouarts of Oil I Like AMSOIL my self take a look at ther web site before you buy read what they have to say which oil you buy there some good oils out there do some reading and see whats right for you.

I just did mine yesterday. Not to bad, took me about 2 hours. I did take a break to eat lunch. I let sealer dry for another hour or so before I put fluid back in it.
It took 3 quarts for the rear and 2 up front, if you have a 4x4.

Does anyone know if someone makes a gasket for the diff... or if our only option is to make our own? I would find the job easier with a gasket.

I think you get more sure of a seal with the sealant over a gasket, just my opinion though, people been using gaskets forever with few problems...

Horsee, where ya been man? Me & Pappy were just mentioning the other day that we ain't seen you post in a bit... Prolly won't see Pappy posting for a few, he just hit the road for about a week for work.
