I am trying to buy an 03 Quad Cab 2500 heavy duty truck with the 5.9 Cummins diesel and auto trans and 144,000 miles. It appears to be stock with no know modifications. My only experience with diesels has been a 6.5 chevy diesel.

What should I be most wary of on this 03?

What knid of fuel economy (range) should I expect?

Anything else?

You may want to post this in the cummins section, you will get some more info. The 03's and early 04's, if broke in properly, can see 17-19 in town and 22+ on the highway. I have an early 04 and strictly town driving, I'm any where from 16.8 to 18.4.

I would check to see what motor is in the 03, I believe there was a 285hp version and the HO 305 hp version. There should be a sticker on the left side of the motor that has that info.
