Default Trailer wiring

I have a brake controller that is plugged into the factory harness and appears to work very well. The way this trailer was wired previously (7-pun with round pins) the ground for the electric brakes was connected to the backup lamp pin. I currently have it wired this way and the brakes work well but another forum was quite animate about it not being done this way. The way I figure it, this setup prevents the trailer brakes from becoming a problem when backing up but if it's somehow going to damage th truck obviously I need to change it.

Can anyone tell me where their trailer brakes get their ground? If it's the center pin in the RV style connector (7 round with flat pins) then it's the same as mine.

Thanks.
