New transmission in 79K miles? Is that typical? Were you keeping up on the maintenance on it? Just curious.

Wow thats quick! I have 85K now and it feels the same as new. Were you towing a heavy load most of the time?

I dont' think there is a norm for how lang they last... just depends on how hard you treat em and how good you take care of them....

Every 30k miles according to the recommended service intervals for servere service--just about everybody fits this category. I changed mine at 15k and 30k. From now on every 30k. If I did lots of heavy towing, I'd consider every 15k.

ya the trans is the weak spot. do some searches and you'll see. get a temp gauge and a bigger cooler if your really worried (and a deeper pan) stay outta second prime too. hit tow haul then get on the gas to pass people. im at 80,000 and run the **** out of it on occasion. engine only gets faster and trans shifts perfectly

I have been hot rodding cars since before I got my drivers license and I have no idea what "second prime" is. Run that by me so I learn something today...

I ASSume it has something to do with the selection of Tow/Haul?

Is it Rebuilt? Or Remanufactured? Most people assume that they are the same but there is a HUGE difference in quality between the 2. A rebuilt part is something any Joe-shmo can do in his garage, by replacing all the seals and clutches. A remanufactured part is when all they pretty much reuse is the outer case. All the internals are usually replaced with new ones along with the seals, clutches, etc. Thats why most dealerships will replace a trans with a remanufatured one with a warranty from the manufacture (like 3yr/36,000 mile.)
In my experience I will NEVER put a rebuilt transmission in any of my vehicles. They just don't last for the money. I might consider a "built-high performance" transmission, but I wouldn't expect it to last forever, but give me great short-term performance, like in a drag car or something. Just my $.02

second prime is the highway passing gear in the 545rfe. the ratio of second is 1.67 :1 and second prime is 1.50:1. if you notice when on the highway when you kick doen to pass and hold that gear it will pull to 85 or so ( at least thats the way mine pulls with 3.92 rear end) and from a stop second only goes to 75 or so. second prime has weak clutches and from the other dodge forums the list is endless to trans being blown from even a stock truck.
