Transmission
Hi all, I am currently looking at a 05 Dodge 1500 Hemi with the A/T. I was talking to a freind of mine, who is a mechanic, said that the transmissions are horrible. I told him that I read somewhere that they started using Mercedez-Benz trannys and it cured the problem. He said that the trans still isn't right, and that everyone he knows with a Ram is having problems with them and Dodge is having almost a 200% call back on some of its trannys. I am looking into buying a Rumble Bee, and I really don't want to drop that much coin if it is going to be constantly in the shop for a new trans. So, did they fix the trans, or is my freind right? Thanks a lot,
Chris
P.S. Great site!

Your friend needs to keep up with the times if he's going to spout off. The new 5-speed automatic is a very reliable transmission. 200% recall? Does your friend realize that a 200% recall would require recalling twice the number of transmissions that even exist? Everyone he knows with a Ram is having transmission problems? That really sounds like a bogus statement if I ever heard of one. Like he knows everybody who owns a Ram, and they are all having issues.
The maintenance costs are high on the new Hemi Rams. You might want to keep that in mind. Also, Dodge has specific recommendations with regard to service intervals, and fluid types. I have owned nothing but GM products before buying my Ram about a year ago. I have had zero problems with my Ram. Talk about transmissions? I had three GM transmissions go out, all under 40,000 miles. One at just under 7,000 miles, one at about 10,500 miles, and one just over 37,000.
Hey, any transmission can go south. But your friend is most likely jealous.

he's full of crap a 200% recall thats every tranny being called back twice or like mazz said recalling more than are made i highly doubt it and i also agree where i think hes jelous some of the doeg trannys are bad but thats just some some are really good too
Dodge had SOME problems with the 2000 and 2001 trannys. The current automatics were not even on the market then. Thats like saying your new Dodge has problems with the tranny that they used in the 1975 models. If the new trannys are going to have problems, they haven't shown up yet.
Thanks. I knew he couldn't be right, especially with the 200% call back, but I didn't want to question him on it, just one of those things you let go. I knew I read somewhere they fixed the problems.
JB, have you seen a dealer on it yet?
Thanks again,
Chris

As far as I know, the latest Rams (mine is an 04) have much better transmissions then years past. The current generation Ram tranny is very reliable from what I've been told. Older models were horrible no doubt.

my 04 hemi is the second dodge i have owned, everything else was chevy! i am happy with the engine but the tranny is something else it has a sloppy 1st to 2nd shift . i guess im used to chevrolets 4l60e damn good tranny especially with the transgo shift kit, that is something i would definently put on my truck when it becomes available
I will have had my truck for a year, come next month, and it has not had any issues at all, has not been back to the dealer since I drove it off.
I've heard that transmission story before, and it did come from some earlier models, as another poster mentioned, but I would think that the current models don't have any more trouble than would be average for other brands.
This is my third Dodge, and I would have to be paid to drive anything else.
