I want to hook up an amp in my 06 ram, but I have not ever done this before. Is this very hard, or do I need to pay the $75 and let someone else do this. Also any help you can give me on getting the head unit out to wire the amp up would be great. Thanks!!!!!!

Are you trying to wire the amp to the factory head unit?

With the little info that we got I can inform you that if you are going to hook up an amp to the fctory head unit, you will need to buy a low pass filter to hook up to the head unit. This will allow you to run RCA cables from the factory unit to the amp. As far as wiring the amp, if you do not feel comfortable, or have little knowledge on electrical wiring, you might want to have some one do the job for you. AMPS blow out very easily if wired incorrectly. If the amp is of decent power, then you will have to run a power wire (roughly 8-10 guage in size), from you battery to your amp. Then wire a remote power wire to it so that it is not on all the time when the truck is off. The most important wire is the ground wire. You have to make sure that the ground wire goes to the frame somewhere where there is no paint and has a clean metal contact. A bad ground will cause the amp to cut in and out and possibly blow if you accidently connect it to close to a power source. Now if you get a really powerful amp (I think anything over 600-700 amps), you might need a power capacitor for the amp. This will be sold separately from the amp, but the dealer will tell you if you need it. Last thing I can tell you is to buy the amp install kit. It will come with all the wires and inline fuse holders that you need for an amp install. You can find them from $45 - $75, depending on what brand you buy. Do not skimp here as the wiring is more important than the amp.

Now for the head unit. If you are going to buy/get an amp. You need to get a unit that has RCA preouts for an amp. This way you don't have to wire in a filter and you will get the true lows to the amp and the speaker. If the amp is going to run a subwoofer, then amke sure that you get a headunit that can power the front speakers enough that you will hear it over the sub.

Yes I am wiring to the factory head unit. It's a small amp 300 watts for two 8" speakers, nothing to big. Thanks for any info you have got!
