Help Starting Issue!!
Bros,
I have an 02 Ram Quad Cab 4.7L 4x4. Its having a hard time starting especially when cold.
When cranking it first thing in the morning it wont start unless I "give it gas" meaning pumping the gas pedal.
I know this makes no sense since its injected. Its just how it is.
Now if I am driving it and run into a store quick and come back out it starts right away with no issue.
This leads me to believe I have a fuel pressure issue.
I replaced the plugs and Throttle positioning sensor with no avail.
I am thinking I need a new fuel pump. Anyone used one from Auto Zone? Any recommendations?
Anyone have the same or similar issue?
Thanx!!

I would think it's kinda soon for a fuel pump. How many miles? Do you let the tank get really low before you fill up? My '95 2500 van needed one at 119K. I had the habit of letting it get to "E" before I put gas in it. That shortened the pump's life considerably. Get it diagnosed/fixed before you get stranded. Mine died right after I filled the tank. Thirty-five gallons of gas wasted, plus over $500 to get the pump replaced. Learned my lesson: never less than 1/4 tank when I gas up.
My 02 with the 4.7 has been doing the same thing over the past couple of months. I found that if you turn to the key to on once or twice it will fire right up. I was also told that there is a check valve in the sending unit that might have went bad, letting all the line pressure drop off. Would realy like to get it figured out!!
My 04 ram had the exact problem with only 30k miles on it. Any time it sat for more than a few hours, it would start very hard. After that it would start normally, until it sat for a long time again. After numerious trips to the dealer they finally found that the fuel pressure was dropping while sitting. Eventually it would drop low enough that the fuel pump would have to make it up before the truck would start. Bottom line, they had to replace the fuel pump. Since then I have not had any starting problems. Hope that this helps.
2 Things you can try. First you can turn the truck to on the on position without starting the truck and wait a few seconds. This will help prime the fuel system before startup. You should actuall hear the pump priming.
The 2nd thing you can try is to check you battery. Other than the '04 that taz mentioned, you all have truck that are little older and might need the battery replaced. Now that it is getting colder all over, the cranking amps might be to low to start a cold engine. Thus while you are driving, shut it off and run a quick errand, come back, the truck will start. Engine is still warm. If you battery is close to 5 years old, I would look to replacing it. Down here in Florida, I have to change my battery every 2-3 years because it gets drained fast from running the AC all the time, and I know batteries last a little longer up north in the cooler climates. If your battery is getting up there in age, then this will be a cheap and easy fix before you move on to pumps and such.

very true that is the first thing i would do is go to autozone and have them test the battery... to me thats what the problem sounds like... if not look into things further but always start with the basics!

I'll 3rd the motion for checking the fuel pump/pressure. I've seen the same issue on a mid 90s K car, early 90s areostar, and early 2000s astro van, and in each case it was either the fuel pump, or in the case of the K car, it was a bad fuel line. If the engine is turning over without a problem your battery won't be the issue.
then what could this be my truck is doing the same exact thing i have replaced the fuel pump along with a new battery and cleaned the injectors and throttle body and new spark plugs still does it any other ideas?
