3.92/4.56/4.88 GEARS
I am trying to get a bit of advise here. I have a 2005 1500 ram 4x4 with 9" of lift sitting on 22" rims with 38" tires. I am not certain if it came stock with the 3.55 or 3.92 gears. What i do know is that going down the freeway its a real dog. Im currently overseas so i cant work on it right now but im trying to get all the parts lined up so when i get back i can get underway on it. Ive got the skirts for the body liftsitting at home, I have ordered the volant CAI, as well as the Stage 2 jets for it. I want to put a TB on it, however i have heard alot of debating whether or not they actually help. The biggest thing that i want to get done is the gears changed out. I was pretty convinced on going with 4.56 gears but ive read that if you have over 35" you should move to the 4.88. Will the 4.88 fit in the stock pumpkins or would i need to change this out? From my understanding its about a 1500-1600 dollar job for a 4x4. I think the 4.56 gears will fit but im unsure about the 4.88. Are the 3.55 and 3.92 diffs the same size? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks
I am unsure if they make 4.88 gears for the 9.25 and the 8" diffs, but I do know that the 3.55 and 3.92 diffs are the same size. All current 1500 rams come with the 9.25 rear and 8" front. This link is a pretty good guide on tire size verse gearing.. http://www.4wheelparts.com/gear_ratio.html hope this helps
On my old Ford it had 3.73 gears in it and I went to 4.56 I wish I put in 4.88 instead I went from 32 inch stock tires to 37-14.50.18 M/T ATZ.
Go with the lowwer gear set you be a lot happyer with them besides you gas MPG going to Suck no matter what you do.

BIGRAM: You having any issues with those big meats on that puny 1500 IFS front end? ALL the guys in my hunting club with tires that big on their IFS trucks (Dodge or other brand) are finding they are breaking front end parts regularly when they are doing any really serious off-roading. Most have gone back to 35's or a few have gotten 3/4 ton trucks with solid front axles and then built those trucks up with no problems. I can't remember the last time any of us went hog hunting without someone with huge tires on an IFS snapping something (almost always when in 4-Lo)...
Knock on wood i havent snapped anything yet. I really appreciate all the information. I ended up deciding on 4.56 gears as i will prob go down to 37" next set of tires. Thanks again for all the info.
