Default Paint Scratches

Any ideas for removing the scratch marks that come from driving through brush (other than painting the fender?). My truck is dark grey w/ gloss topcoat and now some noticable white scratches. They do not go through to the metal. I appreciate all feedback.

White scratches? Try a good cleaner wax first, it may clean off.

I would recommend Scratch-X by Meguires. I got a tube from Walmart and it seems to work well on small clearcoat type scratches without leaving swirl marks.

Mopartodd,

Thank you. Scratch-X by Meguires sounds like a good lead. I saw that you're a Dodge Coronet owner. I went through my late teen years driving a '66 Coronet. It was a stock 4-Dr but it ran great, white with red pin stripe. Again, thank you for taking the time to reply.

Jim

I tried the Scratch X by meguairs. I have the bright silver metalic color on my ram and after applying the wax, the scratches turned more of a whiter shade and can be seen from a mile away. baaaad choice, I detail on the side so I think I may try my three step polish system on it and give it a good buff. I will let you know how it turns out.

fast easy tip from a dealer friend of mine . use transmission fluid cheap kind and rub into the scratches they are still there but the oil seems to fill in the scratch and you can wax right over it with no residue.Dealers been doing it for years.

The 3 step 3M works very well.

All depends how deep the scratches are, If they are deep nothing will help but having the fender re-painted.
I would go to a body shop and see if you can have them buff out the scratches, they will tell you if it can be done. They can do some pretty good buffing with the tricks they use. Or if the scratches are a straight line you can clean the surface the length of the scratch. Then mask as close to the scratch as you can. Then there is a place on line for paint which they will send in a paint spray can. Excellent match as its the manufactures paint code. I would then try to fill the scratches with the spray paint, put down a few coats or until the scratches are filled then you can buff the scratches back down and make it look better that it is now. Then clear coat it and buff again to blend the clear coat. I have a 2004 ram and its maroon in color and I have done my own body work and bought the paint and they also sell the clear coat. It a 100% color match. Try automotivetouchup.com also bought for my 2 daughters 2005 Jeep grand Cherokees and also a great match black and green.

So if you cant get the scratch out, fender needs to be repainted but I would go to the body shop because they have some pretty good cutting polish and might be able to buff out and re-clear coat.

good luck

If they're fairly superficial you can compound them off. Too deep and you'll have to get the paint fixed.
