gear lube in manual trans and diff
My 07 RAM 1500 is about to hit 15k on the clock and time for a major service...
Mobil 1 anda wix filter for the engine
Now the transmission comes stock with ATF (it is a six speed gertag), and historically, I put premium 80w90 GL-5 gear lube in (prefer the Citgo brand JT7 or something like that). Do I need to stick with the crazy ATF or can I use normal gear lube, like every other manual transmission vehicle I have owned or ever owned.
And for the differential...it is the normal, NON limited slip, the other two dodge trucks in the yard have the old 8 and 3/4" limited slip rear ends and they are bullet proof. The new truckhas some crazy light weight oil, again, any problems with using normal 80w90 GL5 gear lube?
The last 5 gallon bucket of gear lube was $72, big jump in the last few years, can still find the cheap stuff at TSC or Walmart for $25 a bucket, but it tends to blow out of the breathers in heavy use.
Thanks so much,
Howard

yup. . .ATF in that tranny. . .your axels need 75-90 GL-5. dont worry about friction modifyer if you have a LSD, the AAM axels do not use clutches.
I can't remember all the details but there was a past post where a Ram owner complained of the Getrag not shifting to his liking, and about using the same synthetic gear oil BMW recommends for use in their Getrags.
We have four BMW motorcycles with the Gertag transmissions, and they all use the GL-5 80w-90 gear lube. I believe the ATF in the manual transmissonis to increase fuel economy for CAFE figures, but does not give maximum transmission life.
