currently i have royla purple in the crank. im due up for and oil change. Could i switch to mobil 1 full syn w/o having problems. i would imagine you can.
I often use whatever name brand full synthetic is on sale. I just make sure I stay with a full synthetic and the same viscosity. Been doing it that way for years and have hadone engine for 180,000+ miles, never had an oil related problem yet...
I average between 5 and 6K miles per year, if I go to a good quality full synthetic (I'm thinking Amsoil) would going a full year between oil change be too long?
I wouldn't wait that long between changes. You live in a cold environment and this will assist in the break down of the oil quicker. Also, the mileage that you are putting up might be short, but how often is the truck started. Start up, and short trips are worse on the oil. If you goto a full synthetic you might be able to get away with 2x's year. Once before the winter and once right after the winter. Depending on your driving habits. Ifthe truck is getting started daily and driven short distances for work and tasks, stick to the every 3 month rule.
Personally I use Mobil 1, and have hadno proplems with it. The place I bought the truck from just did an oil change right before I bought it, so I probably will wait to next year whenthe weather gets warmerto do my own change and switch to Mobil 1 synthetic.
Thanks L and R Two, I'll take your advise. My office is 2 and 3/4 miles from my house so yes my mileage is made up of lots of short highway trips. My real question revolved around how much difference would going to a synthetic make in stretching out my oil changes. The answer is obviously not a great deal. I still intend on going to a synthetic with the new truck. This will be my first use of synthetic lubricant so thanks again for the input!
