Default 20" wheel question

I have a 2006 Ram 1500 slt 4x4.. When i bought it i got the 20" chrome clad wheels... Due to the high cost of 20" all terrain tires i was goin to drop to a 17" wheel so i could buy 17" tires.. I have had a few people tell me that 17's will not fit due to the break calipers on the trucks.. To my knowledge they all have the same size calipers and the 20" wheel was just a Option.. So does anyone have any info. on this?? Im wanting to go with a 17" wheel also that has more offset to it so i can fit a wider tire under it.. Any help would be greatly appreciated....

p.s.
I have installed the 2.5" leveling kit on this truck already..

I personally know two people with aftermarket 17" wheels on their '06 1500. It's also a smart move to go to 17's if you plan on using it off road much.

I think I read on here that you can't go under 17's... Technically your truck started with 17's until it was upgraded to the 20's. 20's aren't standard yet are they???

Yea see the 20" wheels as far as i know was just an option.... I guess i'll find out soon im goin to try 17's after the first of the year.. Im goin to go with 17's and a 33" tire because thats what size tires it came from the factory... the bad part is i'll have to get the computer tuned in for the 17's so my speed will be right.. Do you know the type of whels your friends got?

i did that change prolly never go back amost all 17 will fit but some manufactures make their rims thick in the center just about the same spot as the cailper mb motoring has a set called pedators that look bad *** but due to the thick rim i had to change and go with another option even though it was listed as it fit my truck dicount tire didn't know there was a problem till they arrived and tried to fit them to my truck.

I have never understood this. If factory tire was a 33"total diameterand the new tire is a 33" then the outside diameter is still 33" no matter if you are running a 13, 15, 17, or 20" rim. Is there something I'm missing??
