Default air filter vs. air intake

i want better air flow, but i realy dont car too much about the looks, so i dont care if its a shinny crome tube or the stock tube, but would getting and air intake system add all that much more flow then just putting on an hi flow filter?

Well I think the system Pirata has is the way I am going to go. K&N 63-1533 CAI

I have the K&N drop in right now (courtesy of Hammer when he upgraded to a CAI) and I am very pleased with it.

I have an 04 ram hemi sport and i bought the K&N FIPK cold air intake for my truck and I love it. As for the difference between the two.... a cold air system eliminates the big box with the small air hole. the box restricts the amount of air getting to the engine. a cold air system is just a filter for the air getting to the engine. in a nut shell the cold air system allows more air and cooler air to get into the combustion chamber for better responce.

WAG'ers (wild *** guessers)
just slap on an air intake
and measure it with their 'butt dyno'

Butt Dyno always equals Butt Dumbo
especially when you consider these same people
have a free stopwatch built into their cell phone!

People who really want to make engines perform
measure their MAP (manifold absolute pressure)
and IAT (intake air temperature)
sensors before and after any air intake change
and send parts back for refund
if the MAP sensor doesn't read higher
and the IAT sensor doesn't read lower
at full throttle and redline rpm.

What kind of person are you concerning engines?

WAG'er or Winner?

Hank, once again you provide such insightful and friendly information!

I installed an Airaid CAI on my 4.7L months ago and so far I am pleased with the "butt dyno'ed" increase in performance and the slight increase in fuel economy. Not to mention how much better it sounds.

I have an ebay version so I got all the benefits for $70 rather than $400+. As far as it being a placebo, well, I don't think it is. I've been modding cars for a long time and know what's hype. My car is faaaaarrrrr faster than my truck and I've built other cars that made it look like a slug (over 120mph traps in the 1/4). I'm pretty jaded when it comes to performance, yet I like what the intake did for my truck.

The stock airbox's intake hole isn't that restrictive; it's just as big as the tubing to the throttle body. Most of the restriction is in the "Hemi hat". The intake will maximize gains from other mods like a tuner or exhaust.

Yes, it makes a big difference. The stock box, tubes & baffles add a good bit of restriction. If it's in the budget, opt for the CAI...
