I too went round and round with this problem on my previous Dodge (a 2K Dakota with the premium sound). While it's a different vehicle, the problem was the same. New speakers with factory head unit / amp sounded like crap! After fighting it for a while I ended up replacing the head unit, bought a small aftermarket amp to replace the factory one (actually got it to fit in the same place), and ran all new speaker wire. After all of that it sounded pretty good - but it was sure irritating. That's why when I bought my '05 Ram I didn't even bother with the "premium" sound. Ordered one without it knowing that if I wanted to do anything with it I'd have to replace the whole thing, so why bother with paying the extra to start with...
