okay, 310 h/p from the 4.7 is better than 300 h/p 5.43v Ford. I did not know that he 4.7 is over 300/h/p

ORIGINAL: K4u2luz2

Hey all, last week I bought an 08 QC 4wd with the new 4.7L v8. I've got to say that this was the hardest decision ever. I have drove a 06 hemi for 20K miles and a 07 4.7 for about 23k miles. So when it came time to get the 08 I had a hard time making up my mind. The 07 4.7 drove me crazy andI told myself that I would not even consider looking at a 4.7 ever again. Then when I went to the dealership they told me about the changes for 08 and I took one for a drive then came back and took a Hemi for a ride. The Hemi was had little better acceleration (especially over 60mph) but from a stand still you don't miss the 30 hp. I am wonderingwhat anyone else's thoughts are.

Now my new worry is the gas mileage (arg!) I am only getting 12.8 mpg(so much for the claimed 25% increase in fuel economy from Dodge) My 07 4.7 averaged 14.8 to15.2 and the 06 Hemi averaged high 17's. Hopefully after a few more miles it will improve or I am going to have to trade it in on the exact same truck but with a Hemi.
Peak HP numbers sell cars/trucks but the power under the curve is what really matters. Even though the 4.7 has 305hp now it's power curve is no where as flat and broad as the hemis.

I'm not sure what all the changes are for the 4.7 to get it over 300hp but it'll always come at some cost...more power = more fuel.Since it's the same displacement they probably raised the compression, better flowing heads, intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. If they raised the compression too high the 4.7 might need 91+ octane gas.

If you're interested in a good update on the 4.7, Allpar has an interesting writeup on the changes. I am no mechanic and hestitate to go in to detail. They did change the intake and went to 16 sparkplugs I don't recall reading about compression changes. Still runs on 87 octane, or E85 if you prefer.

Manualagain you are right they went to to 2 spark plugs per cylinder, raised the compression by one, changed the fuel rails and injectors to much larger ones, changed the pulleys so all of the accesories run at different speeds than earlier 4.7s and changed the heads.

Severdistortion you are also right about what sells trucks. The new horsepower is 310 and the Hemi is 330 to 345 depending on what you read or what year Dodge brochure you are reading.

I know that it is a truck and trucks get TERRIBLE gas mileage, I also owned and drove a SVT Lighting for two years. With these changes Dodge is claiming a 25% increase in gas mileage over previous years 4.7L. I haven't seen that yet and I know that the truck needs to break-in but so far I can't seem to shake the feeling likeI made a bad descision in maybe not getting the Hemi with MDS. The only solace I feel right now; and what lead me to buying the 4.7 is that next summer gas is going to be $4 a gallon and Ethanol should be what we are currently paying for gas. I hope I'm wrong for all of our sakes though.

K4u2luz2, I have no clue what the price of gas is going to be even next week, but over the life of my truck I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that having the option to run E85 turns out to be a blessing.
