The 4.7, if kept up with even marginal care, is a workhorse. I personally know people with the 4.7's in a wide variety of Chrysler vehicles and some have well over 200,000 miles on them. I know one particular 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner who has 230,000 miles on his and has yet to have an engine related issue. Had to have a tranny rebuild at 140k miles and has had lots of stupid little things like A/C, power windows and rotor horror stories, buthis enginehas beensolid...
If you have an "old" 4.7 with only 70k miles on it, then it's either in dire need of a tune up or it has not been kept up at all and dogged. I'd take a full day on the weekend and give that thing a good, solid 100% tune up and see what that does...

I read that our trucks don't do well with platinum plugs...I might be wrong, but maybe someone else can chime in.

BTW, does anyone know the factory recommended gap range? Owners manual doesn't say anything O/C but don't exactly feel like ponying up for the FSM [yet]....

Due to my particular loan deal I'm stuck with thing no matter what anyway ...
yup, guess I can't start anywhere till I do the basics with air, oil and spark. FWIW I'm not complaining about POWER ... compared to my 4.3L/4L60E/3.23 Sierra this 4.7L/5mt/3.55 Ram has ungodly amounts of torque, and will likely get better MPG to boot.

.040". and my 04 4.7 manual is an absolute beast, its only got 47000 mi, but it never hesitates when I get into it, even in 5th. good luck man, and everyonye i've talked to says the 4.7 is in line with the old fore 4.9 in terms of toughness.

Nothing too much to add to what the others have said...give 'er a good tune up- replace the plugs, air filter, oil / filter, etc...you may also want to change the diff fluid, trans fluid, and t-case fluid while your at it (at 70K I think they are all past their recommended service interval). While your at it you may also want to consider cleaning the throtle body (they can get a little dirty inside), throw some quality injector cleaner in the fuel tank, and if the oil is super nasty you might think about some of that engine oil cleaner stuff (several brands, you throw it in with your normal oil, run the vehicle for like 10 min, drain / change filter and fill it back up with new oil)...heck, if your really motivated you could use some Chrysler Combustion Chamber cleaner..(see https://dodgeforum.com/m_935565/tm.htm). I used it to help a friend who bought an old beater 1st gen, the smoke is a bit alarming, but to my disbelief the thing ran allot better when it was over with
