1500 Hemi towing capacity
Hey all,
I have an'05 and Iknow what the specs are, I was just wondering how much people have towed with them, and how they reacted to a lot of weight?I have an open steel deck 18' car trailer that I use to haul my race car around, the trailers unlaoded weight is about 2000# and the car is 2900#, and I normally have about3-400# in the bed of the truck with spare tires tools and stuff. The truck has never had a complaint pulling it, except the one time I was coming down a mountain and forgot to increase the trailers brake bias and cooked the front braks int he truck warping th rotors and all.
We are thinking about upgrading the to a 28' enclosed trailer, completely emptythey weigh about 3500#, and the one we are looking at has a generator, AC, lighting, winch, cabinets, toolbox, 40 gallon water storage, built-in shower and sink, and an exteriorawning. I have to guess that adds at least another 1000# or so, without me putting my tools tires and car into it, so I am guessing fully loaded the trailer would be about 8000# or a little more.
How many of you have pulled that much behind a 1500 Hemi, and how did it work out for you?
Thanks,
John

I have pulled 6500 with mine, you dont worry about the motor its the suspension and rear end.
IMO, i wouldnt do it, that is quite a bit over the rating for the vehicle, after you account for people in the cab, fuel, and water in the trailer you will be WAY over. If you are going to do it, at he very least get airbags, tranny temp gauge.
if it were me, i would go get a 2500 at the least, probably one with a cummins. you fuel savings alone will be worth it

Also, are you sure that trailer weighs 3500 pounds? when we were looking at trailers for hauling and for camping, we discoverd that the posted UGVW. was true, but they took that without ANY options. No tanks, batteries, shower, etc.
We looked at a trailer advertised at 2650, they let me take it to the scales, and fully loaded out it weighed 3450 pds. Just an FYI for you to look out for. Pay more attention to GVWR laded.

I understan the suspension is crappyand I was planning on addressing that some with either airbags orspring blocks, but I don't understand your comment about it being quite a bit over the rating. If it is 8000#, that is still under the rating by a good deal? What am I missing?
I an only guess at the loaded rate because the guy selling it has not gotten back to me on the actual weight yet, and he is out in Ohio so it's not like I can just run and check it out for myself.
I looked up the empty weight not just the factory numbers but what others have posted about the weight of thiers and it actually came in under 3500# I was just rounding up. Then it is a guess on the weight of all the extra's, and that is again rounded up to be around 1000# more, putting the trailer unloaded weight at around 4500#, + 2900# for my car, + misc tools and stuff I figured 8000# was a safe guess. My understanding is that with the way my truck was packaged it has a 85-8600# towing capacity...
Please let me know if this does not sound right, but I thought I checked it all out thoroughly when researching this stuff...

RE: 1500 Hemi towing capacity
OK I conceed I was a little worng on my guesses on the weight, the current owner just took it down and weighed it for me, as it sits now it is 5080#...
So plus my car, tires, tools, and etc I would be looking at a loaded weight of ~ 8500 if I loaded everthing I have on board, so that is just about the limit of the factory towking capacities. I would probably be closer to 83-8400# though. Has anyone ever towed that much in a 1500 hemi?

I pull a 35' RV with mine. '05 QC 4X4 Hemi. Trailer loaded weighs around 9500#. It's a chore, but it takes the abuse. Luckily we don't pull it too much.

Thanks for this info, is it bad on the hills? and does it feel too bad on long hauls. The furthest race I have next season is about 1200 miles each way, in your experiance would it struggle too much with that?
