Default Bigger Tires Worse MPG

is it true that if you get bigger tires your MPG will go down? I have a 2007 dodge ram 1500 with the stock 17 inch rims and tires on it and i was going to get 18 inch rims and nitto terra grapplers to fill my wheel wells a little more. also, what diameter would a 285/60R-18 RN 120S B come out to?

Yes, very true. It has to do with both weight and rolling resistance. Taller tires would effect it and so would wider tires. So, if like me, you get taller and wider tires, you're screwed...

The best thing you can do is get the appropriate gearing if your going to upgrade to bigger tires. Now if your talking about moving up to a 285, then yeah your going to feel the burn on mpgs. That's not a big enough tire to change your gearing, so you'll have to pay a little on the gas. But as long as you get bigger gearing to compensate for bigger tires, it will keep it in proportion to the mpg of a stock truck

That is true, compared to stock tires I lose about 4 mpg. but it is worth it to me.

And a 285/60-18 is 31.46" in diameter. If you've got the 245/70-17s like I do, thats about 1" taller and 1.6" wider than stock.

You are gonna hate your life, well not that extreme, my dodge came stock 275 60 20, get about 15mpg, I was gonna put on 325 60 20 and my buddy (who works at discount tire) refused to sell them to me, he said I'd key his truck after my first visit to the pump. You might as well go with a 20 inch, going from 17-18 isnt gonna do much at all for looks.
