looking for tires
whats up everyone. im new to the forum. ive got a 06 quad cab 4x4.i want to take off my 20s and put on some all terrains i would like maybe 285/70/17s but my truck is not leveled any suggestions for a nice all terrain tire would be helpful.
First of all let me commend you on wanting to take those 20" wheels off. No self respective off-roader would have them. Not enough meat to flex for any serious off-roading unless we are talking like 38" or larger tires here.
Now on to your question: 285/70/17's are approx. 32.7" tall x 11.2" wide. Max for a stock 3rd gen 4x4 is 33" x 12.5" assuming your selected wheel has enough offset & backspace.
There are a number of good A/T tires in and around that size. I'ma huge Mickey Thompson/Dick Cepek fan. Been runnin 4x4 trucks hard off-road since before I was old enough for a license and I'm 40 now. Have never hadan issue with their tires and they all seem to wear like iron on the highway. The Mickey ATZ' are a great tire, and for a little more off-road ability you may want to look at the Dick Cepek Fun Country II's (it's what I currently run) they are a cross between a A/T and a M/T. Other popular choices are Toyo A/T's and Nitto Terra Grapplers.
TDMopar is gonna chime in and recommend his Pro Comps, and although his is a relatively new design, everyone I know with Pro Comps have them wear out on the highway pretty fast. I've got a buddy with their M/T's who had to replace them after 18k miles as the highway driving wore them to where they were just spinning in mild mud.

Yea, just make sure you choose a 17" wheel with about 4.5" of backspacing and you should be ok. The Nitto's are a good choice, solid and dependable. The only negative I've heard about them is that they are a little loud. But that's the trade-off, if you want an A/T that will get you out of the woods like some of the M/T's then they are going to be loud like an M/T. My Dick Cepeks are the loudest A/T's I've owned (don't get me wrong, they're nothing like Baja Claws or Boggers) but they have gotten me out of stuff that a milder A/T would not have.
