noise when steering????
Alright,
I own a 2004 dodge ram, 70 000KM quad cab. 4.7 V8. When I steer left or right it makes whining noise. I havent cheked yet, but I think the power steering fluid is low. A couple questions, why would it go low on a 3 year old truck , is it a leak, or should I expect this at 70K. When do the steering pumps need replacement or do they ever??? Any help is great.

believe it or not the power steering pumps rarely go out in the average vehicle... its normally fluid levels... going by what you said i would fill it... 70k you can expect a fluid loss.. if it becomes frequent check the lines for a leak...
Look around the steering rack. Apparently, they leak in some of the hose connections. Lotsa folks have had good results using ye olde basic worm-drive hose clamps (in the event it leaks at one of the connections). Your basic assumption is probably correct: it's low on fluid. REMEMBER, it does NOT use regular PS fluid. Mine uses ATF+4
hey, i had a 03 4.7 quad cab w/ 90k, ! 1st i noticed that the pump was making noise, but i waited a while then by the time i found out that it had a leak (streering rack)i brought it to the deal to fix it. the noise stayed, so word to the wise have it fixed soon, because once that pump runs low on fluid for a while it will make that noise for the rest of its life!!!
about a month ago I had that problem so I took it into the shop and they said I was leaking power steering fluid so your probably doing that or just really low on it..just my guess though
I sell the hell out of power steering hoses for those things, I did one today. Peek under the front of your truck and see if the hoses are leaking. They are very easy to see, you can see it going right into the gear
