Yeah I always let a vehicle warm up. I usually let it warm up until the rpm gauge has stopped moving. If it's still ideling higher than usual it means it is still warming up. There is nothing more annoying to me than someone just starting their whip up and then throwing it into drive. I have like a very set ritual when I start my truck lol. I love starting it up. I usually let it sit for about 5-10 minutes depending on if I'm in a hurry. But usually I always aim to let it get down to it's usual idle point. I also put it in neutral when I start it so the transmission fluids can start circulating through aand warming up. You can see I take pride in starting the beast up in the morning
I completely agree, people drive like that and then wonder why their vehicles go to crap.

I usually warm mine up for 3-7 minutes. Gotta get the fluids circulating or you'll be running a somewhat dry engine/tranny. Not good.

dodgeneon, sorry for the misunderstanding, i'm not saying you wait for the heat to come out, i'm not pointing any fingures and did not say that you were annoying to me, all i'm saying is the reason people have around my region to warmup their cars in winter is to get heat, they don't even turn their cars off when going to the corner store. They do the same thing in summer for the AC, these are the one's.

+ i'm not sure thats its better warming up your car for more than 3 mins, so unless someone has substantial proof for either my way or yours, i'll just stick to mine since i'm more comfortable with it. That's the way my father drive's and kept his cars for a long time, never had issue's with engine or trans. To each their own

I never warm up unless its really cold out (20 degreesor less) and usually thats just to get the ice off the windshield. My family has owned MANY new vehicles and my dad still has his caddilac escalade from 1999 that he bought new with 170,000 miles on it ZERO problems he NEVER warms up unless its REALLY cold out like 10 or below. He doesn't beat on the truck but seeing how long that thing has lasted I might as well do the same and I bought my truck used so no clue what the other owner has done for warming up. I will keep starting my truck and driving it like I always have.

With my dad and moms new diesels though we always let them warm up (they need it).

You HAVE to let a diesel warm up or the thing will not last.

Warmup is bad for the motor. Start it up, idle down the driveway, don't lean on it for a few minutes. It'll warm up faster if it's working (moving the truck) than just sitting. I only let mine warm up a few minutes on very cold mornings and that's for my creaky ol' bones, not the drivetrain.

A new Cadillac Escalade bought with 170K miles? That's a serious dealer demo! Sorry, couldn't resist

So you are still letting it "warm up" before you hit the throttle, as opposed to the people who get in and go petal to the metal from start-up.

On most days, I'll let it run until the idle drops to normal. Maybe a touch longer on cold days (cold is below zero F). So not very long.

Then, I drive it, but very gently until it hits normal operating temps. Once it's at normal temp, anything is fair.

Moving gets the fluids circulating better than sitting still. Idling doesn't do much to warm up your tranny. But take it easy until things are warm.

Actually, I don't get to go "pedal to the metal" much. I'm in traffic within three minutes and we all meander into town at 40-50 mph. It only takes me twenty minutes or so to get to work. My truck gets a bit more excercise evenings and weekends. Anyway, I never lean on it when it's cold, even if I'm late for work. It's five years old and 92K miles. Hope to go to at least ten years before the itch to replace comes along. Heck, as long as it runs and meets my needs, I may keep it longer.

30 seconds to a minute....just long enough for the idle to drop, oil to lube the engineand to avoid the clunking when putting her in drive.
