Want v. Need
Hey everyone,
As I want the LB Quad cab 4x4 Hemi 2500, I often asking myself the above question; want or need? Well if I was to be honest, it would be more want than actual need. I don't want to be looked at as the guy who is making up for something, or that I need a 2500 to haul a bag of mulch from Home Depot. My need for the LB is to fit my snowmobile in with the gate closed, overkill I know! I have wanted a full size truck for at least 5 plus years now.
So how did the rest of you deal with want v. need?
Thanks,
Zack

I always get what I want, f you get what you need you will always be looking at the one you wanted.
I started out with a Ram 1500, straight six, manuel, very standard. Although it was a good truck I would always see Dodges with the extended cab, bigger engine and say to my self "I should have gotten that one". Now that I have my 2500 Turbo Diesel Mega cab, I am very happy.
But I actually do need the bigger truck, I will be hauling my 4500 lb car, and two bikes in the back, that 1500 would not be able to handle that.

Want vs. need. 90-95% of the time I could drive a RCSB with no problems.
I went through the same need/want feelings recently. And after having an 82 C10 Chevy 2wd long bed with a 280HP 350ci for 20 years I knew what I wanted.
1. 4wd... The 2wd is horrible in anything but dry weather unless I have the bed loaded.
2. Quad cab... I have three kids (11,8,8...yea twins are great!) and a wife (N.F.L. if she doesnt start giving it up more often). Itsnot safeto pack three kids in the front seat of a truck to go somewhere when the wife is not home.
3. 8ft bed... CANT haul S*it in anything less. I cut my mom's lawn, somy mower (w/bagger) wont fit in a 6 footer.
4. 2500... this is where the'want' or future plan starts...I used to drag race when I was younger and the guy I raced with had an F150 w/300 straight six. AWESOME tow engine (once hauled 7388 lbs to the scrap yard over the blue mountain on PA 309 with that truck). So if my boys get interested in the 450HP 64 Nova I have covered in the corner of my garageas they get older we will be in business to tow to the drags.
5. Hemi 5.7... More 'want' for the future incase we are towing to the drags. Diesel was ruled out because I only put about 6000miles a year on a truck (3mi commute to work). I drive my 70 Lemans Convertible from April to October
6. Laramie-J package... I bought a left over '07 and it came with the truck. It should help resale if needed. Everyone likes to see 'loaded' on used stuff. Leather feels good.
Hope this helps

Had (97 clubcab w/ 318 engine):
Truck that was comfortable to ride in but difficult to get into the back. Truck could barely pull a trailer with 3 large round hay bales and a bed load of feed grain. Truck that got 15 mpg when just going down the road unloaded. Truck that had limited storage (due to access) when needing to carry 2 people and equipment for work. Truck that is basically worn out after nearly 11 years and 200K miles of service to me. And it has the basic AM/FM/CD/tape radio, AC, power windows & locks, and power seat.
Need:
Truck capable of carrying myself, and my parents (easy to get in and out) that can also easily pull a trailer loaded with 3 large round bales and a bed load of grain feed. Truck that has easy access to stow equipment and gear for work. Truck that gets more than 15mpg. Truck that is comfortable with a power seat, AC, AM/FM/CD, and power locks & windows.
Want:
Electric Blue extended cab pickup.

Want, V, Need = Budget. Than get the best bang for your buck.
Problem is Wants never go away, needs stay the same if your with in a budget.
Or if you can afford your wants, get what ever the hell you want.
Want or need is always the question. When I sold my '05 F-150 in February or March the understanding was that it was to be replaced before the end of the year with another (4X4 this time) full sized truck. I took possession of the new truck on December 1st. One could make the case that if I could live without a truck from March thru November that maybe a truck really wasn't an absolute need, though it seemed like it was to me. People are by nature remarkably flexable creatures who can adjust to a lot of different circumstances. I suspect that a lot of what we "need" is mostly what we have convinced ourselves we "need" and is in fact just what we want. I don't think wanting is of and by itself bad, though a little more honesty in determing want versus need would probably be a good thing for most of us!
