We've been stationed in Germany for 4 years now (3 in Wiesbaden/Mainz and now in Bamberg)and looking to do a few more. I actually came across this forum while searching for Quad tracks in Germany. As for your question, I wouldn't sell what you have. You'll do just fine with your current truck. My husband has an 07 Dodge Ram 2500 Mega 6.7 Diesel 2x4and pulls our 12' trailor w/ 3 quads in it just fine in all weather. Yes, gas is extremely high on the ECONOMY, but as long as you top off on post and purchase an ample amount of gas coupons you'll continue to pay our prices and not the locals. Diesel is the most expensive of our fuels over here but only by cents. Hope this helps!

diesel is 8 bucks a gallon, you wont drive in 4x4 for that reason. You'll have issues when driving in the cities. Have you been to Europe before? Every little piece of **** car does fine over there in bad weather.
Youre not driving a piece of wood 4x2

RamItOne is correct. Diesel is actually over $8 a gallon if you have to pay for your gas on the local economy. However as a US Military member you will only pay a little over $3.00 a gallon at AAFES. I just filled up today. Hope this helps!

You will probably end updriving your motorcycles more than the Ram, some of the towns have very narrow streets and your Ram is going to be the biggest thing around. Most of the cars are the size of a Mini.

Well I am here, and luckily I did not bring my truck, I drove it home to canada for my parents to look after her (my dad was quite pleased lol) I would have had a devil of a time parking it, even on base! The spots are sooooo small. My husbands F150 does not fit at all, and of course the streets in some places are so narrow. i have my SL500 and both of our motorcycles to it will not be to bad with them though.

You are moving to Germany and intend on driving an American full sized truck? That will never happen! Gas is 4 times as expensive and they tax engines more according to size and a 5.0 liter engine will bankrupt you. I hope you didn't mean you are trying to drive one of those in Germany.. lol.. And bty they mostly drive diesel...

Gas is not the issue, it is the size, I was going to bring my truck but it just is too long. My husband has is F150...and it fits ok in some places, it is the smaller towns that give us a bit of trouble. Nope gas for us is the national average in the US, we can either buy it on base, or at Esso stations across Europe.

I lived In Ramstien back in 1992 when the Fighter Squadrons where still there (526th & 512th). I also spent 6 years in Aviano Italy where the roads/towns are even smaller. And I see no reason why you could not physically drive your truck there. Sure you will not be able to take some "SIDE STREETS" in the "SMALLER TOWNS" .. but as long as your paying attention and stay on the main roads you will not have ANY issues. Sure parking can be tricky... but if you don't mind parking and walking you will find parking no problem... front row parking may be difficult because the spaces are smaller.

Fuel is fuel... You need it and as mentioned above, around base your unlikely to feel the "PINCH" but Its when your far from base that hurts... I know they used to give fuel rations monthly when I was there... basically you buy the gas coupons and certain stations across Europe accept them. Plan ahead and save them up when ever possible... ALWAYS buy your MAX allotted Ratios each month weather you need them or not. This comes in handy when you take trips.

If you NEED your truck then take your truck... If you don't NEED your truck then you may want to consider taking a smaller vehicle... but I would not get too too excited over it. I would have thought Gas cost to be the biggest factor of any issues but soldbyyou.com says its not... so perhaps its not... and honestly driving a big vehicle isnt really a big deal either. So to me it sounds like NO BIG DEAL... sure you will run into some issues...but you will be able to figure it out.

So decide if you are going to NEED the truck... if so then take it and don't look back. you will figure it out in a short period of time...

FYI... study and take the European drivers test and get your license before you go... TRUST ME... that test is a PITA and is very difficult (At least it was when I took it)... any head start will only help you get rolling quicker.

SPEED SAFE, AIR RAM

Ok, someone resurrected an old thread. I think it was the OP, actually. We can all stop the advice now, though... she is already over there. As I suspected, it was more of a SPACE issue than a fuel issue that they are facing over there.
