Default Cams

I know most people are doing the Comp Cams 260 but has anyone else done the bigger one like the 273? Any other ones out there turning big numbers? I like a mean rough idle!

the 273 is gona need some tunning and its power is way over the stock or even raised shift points. still on a hope and prayer for sct or diablo custom tuning. 268 with the smt6 or psc1 will work with a nice lope. or call stu at the hemishop and tell him wat your looking for and he will build you a custom cam and make it work how ever you need it ex: tunning, no tunning, lots of torque, all hp etc...

if i'm thinking of the right cam, the 273 would need you to raise your shifts points and rev limiter to the 6800 range to get the full benefit. Keep in mind the hemi internals were only tested for balance up to about 6300 rpm. [/align]

Wait for the SCT to be out and tested before doing anything more than a 268. I'm holding out for them because I want a KRC 210 custom 4 degrees advanced, a couple of custom tunes held on the SCT would fix me right up and also hold the misfire CELs in check. That custom grind on the 210 cam really makes for a torque beast...

OK. I will ask a different question. What cam should I do? I have the SC programer that lets me rev +500 over stock but doesn't do crap for shift points. I am the lucky owner of a 03. I have done headers, Magna cat back, stock cat, shift kit, converter, Auburn LSD, 456's, and a home made ram air to the stock box with a K&N drop in. I plan on changing that soon. I would like to have a nice bumpy idle. I don't mind doing springs and retainers and push rods to get a nasty cam but if I can get a nice bump without doing the head work that would be great as I am a little low on funds. I do plan on going wild when the motor gets tired but I only have 45,000 on it now. What can I get without doing any head work and what is suggested with head work. Is it worth doing full head work including port work at this time or do the stock heads have good flow for the comp cams. I remember reading an article that stated only doing the 273 cam and a stand alone computer and got something like 500hp without doing anything else internal. This was a crate motor though. Any thoughts?

I'm about where you are at, but have the luxury of a little better SC tune as I have an '04.
I've done the gears, auburn lsd, CAI, cat back, upgraded wires, e-fan, LT headers. No tranny work yet though. I was originally planning a the custom grind KRC 210 I spoke of above as I'm more interested with beasty torque as opposed to high end HP. I have a 4x4 that now weighs in close to 7000 lbs, so I'm never going to set any speed records anyway. Then I'll finish with the torque converter. I have no plans on head work, so this will be as far as I'm taking it.
I've heard tell that the SCT (not yet released, but in extensive testing right now) has tamed just about the most aggressive cams out there. I've heard enough good things from two individuals in particular who've been working with it (writing tunes, etc.) to make me wait for it, rather than doing it now and going the cam tuner, piggyback route.

I heard the same thing. I think I will hold off. Don't want to rush things. I hear Moe's is coming out with one that has some big lift but not to crazy on the deration. Should be a strong contender.
