Default Buying an out of state 2500 MegaCab diesel

Hello all. I'm new to this forum but I've been an active participant to bimmerforums.com (with the same screen name) for quite a while now and I know and understand the power of consumor forums for information gathering. Greetings.

So I have decided to buy a 2500 Megacab diesel...2006 or 2007 4x4. I have been doing a ton of my own research here and other places but I though I would give you all the oportunity to chime in and speak your mind of your experiences with the Megacab.

We currently own a Expedition Eddie 2wd with the 5.4 and tow pack. We tow a 7500lb toy hauler on average twice a month here in the mountainous southern California area. I am killing this SUV by doing this...I can feel it happening gradually. So we want a truck with as much interior room and a diesel engine...hense, the MegaCab.

So I am currently looking at trucks all accross the US as there aren't very many 4x4 Mega diesels in souther Cali to choose from. As I will be most likely buying the truck sight unseen, what should I have the PPI techs looking for specifically? Anything in particular...recalls...TSBs...updates...crappy aftermarket installs...yadayadayada.

Help me find a great example of one of these beautiful trucks to purchase without getting my *** handed to me.

TIA for any and all help.

Eric

i've been interested in the same truck, 2500 or 3500 Mega Cab CTD. IMO if you find a 2007. I would get the 5.9L over the 6.7. It seems from what I've read about any 5.9L CTD in the year range you are looking will be OK. If it has been properly maintained. I've been watching Ebay for almost a year. It seems like there is a lot to choose from in the western states. Texas, Arizona, and Nevada are relatively close for you to fly and drive home. Find a reputable dealer setup an independent inspection and go for it.
I like this one.

I've test driven two 2008 3500 SRW CTD Mega Cab's and I'm hooked. The only thing holding me back is the emission problems seen by many 6.7L owners. But it seems that as time goes on it is getting better. I went to the Detroit auto show and the new 2009 1500 looks nice. And from what I gathered the 2500 and 3500 wont be changing for at least another year. Then the Mega Cab will probably go away. And there will be a diesel option for the 2010 1500 model year. So I may wait for a left over 2008 or see what the 2009 model year brings for the 2500 and 3500 line.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

I bought my truck new from a dealer in NC, I live in NJ. They delivered it and I got to look it over good and take it for a test ride and all, then signed the papers.

If I didn't want it, they would've taken it back, no problem.

I just had to fax them a copy of the check made out them before they would ship it.

I have an 08 Mega Cab (Hemi) and I love the space. We also have an expedition and I can see why you would be looking for a truck to pull your toy hauler. My advice would be to get the 5.9 CTD. I work with alot of contractors that pull heavy loads and they all wish they had there 5.9 back instead of 6.7. Now this will probabilly get better over time but if you are looking for something now go with the 5.9.
I hope this helped

were there a few mega cabs that were desigated as 1500s with the diesel?

also, I can't seem to find any leather interiors on the 2006 models. what's up with that?

and because the Mega Cab isn't going to offered for 2009...is that a good thing or a bad thing for current mega cab owners?

The weight of the CTD requires the 2500 or larger chassis. I'm pretty sure the CTD has never been offered in a 1500. That's why there is some excitement brewing regarding the alleged development of a V6 diesel for the 1500 coming out in 2010.

A dealer told me the Mega cabs are not that popular. I was told, the new 2009 1500 cab is only 2 inches smaller. So I'm not sure what that means for current Mega Cab owners when they stop making them. But I'm hoping I can get one this year.

And if you want leather seats in a 2006 Mega. Check this one out.
