If you just performing labor, and hauling stuff, your not going to make a lot, every body has a old half ton that's paid for and your never ever going to compete with guys who have the 3 tons, five tons and roll off bins.
The best way is to build decks, fences, or exterior interior painting. landscaping, or step into a elctrical, plumbing or Hvac releated trades.
You can make a good buck and write off your dodge rellated expenses, a nice clean new model truck gives you an edge on first impressions.
I'm in the Ress. construction industry in Calgary Alberta, my 06 2500 Ram is my daily work horse and I do a lot side jobs, you can never go wrong owning a truck, but be wise of your expenses ...

takes money to make money. I have a few guys around here that bought E-ZEE Dump trailers and obtained contracts with homebuilders to clean up all their debris and toss it in the back of the trailerto get it off the property. they have been doing it for 5 years or so and seems to be an excellent money maker. just need truck, trailer, and a good back, and a place to dump at.
