In-dash GPS options?
Ok, I'm in the market for a GPS, but the more I think about things, the more I'd like to have an in-dash GPS system. I really like the non-cluttered look, and since I'm gonna be adding a couple of things (GPS and backup monitor), I'd love to be able to have them all together. I thought about getting a used REC radio/nav unit and getting a Gentex backup mirror/monitor (it's pretty cool, when you shift in reverse, the LCD monitor shows up in the mirror, can't see it when you are in drive... and it's auto dimming). I've heard some good things about the Kenwood DNX7100 indash radio/nav, fits double-DIN (4" tall) dash openings; will that work for a Ram? Anyone know what models will fit? I'd rather not have one that had a motorized screen. If anyone has any info, pass it on.
Thanks!
Thanks!
That's the Kenwood I was looking at the other day. It'll take a bit more work to get it into my dash but I'm still very tempted. I have a Sirius subscription as well as the Kenwood Music Keg - 40 gigs of MP3s that connect via the CD changer controls, including title / artist / album display on the head unit.
Crutchfield says the Kenwood will not fit. Thats a bummer!

You can use a double din no problem, you just have to get this bezel. If your truck has the silver instead of the wood grain like mine that is no problem, the dealership has those and im sure you could find one on ebay too.
Now that you have this dash, any double din GPS will fit. I am looking into the alpine iva-w205 with the blackbird II GPS. The blackbird can be carried around with you or used in another vehicle, but when you are in your truck, it slides into the alpine deck behind the screen. You can then use the nav function from the big screen! This is perfect if you want in dash navigation but also would like a portable GPS. Alpine also has the BEST screens hands down, there really is no competition.
Here is a crutchfield tip: when you are selecting your vehicle, select the "with factory navigation" option. You want to do this because after you get the replacement (nav) bezel you will have a standard double din opening in which you can put any double din or single din with a din adapter. Crutchfield will show you all options once this is selected.
Also, if you have the infinity setup you need this amplifier turn on interface.

Thanks redbeard, that's what I figured out last night. I looked at the alpine too, but I can't see paying that much for it all; you can find the kenwoods refurbished on ebay starting at around $750, or new ones for about $100 more. They will handle backup cams, ipods, dvds, and more. All I need to do is get a new bezel (less than $100). I'll probably get all the stuff to mod it next month; right now, I'm about to install my superchips, true flow xdi, and an auto headlight kit. I'll post pics when I'm done.
And thanks for the info on the turn-on interface, I didn't know about that!

no problem! the alpine is kind of expensive, but when you consider you now also have a portable gps it is worth it to me. It also supports the backup cam, ipods, dvd's, bluetooth, hd radio, XM, Sirius, etc... but the choice is yours!
