Default AWD question

Quick question in regards to AWD.

I have a 04 5.7 QC 4x4 with the AWD. My question is that does anyone know how this system works? Does itengage and disengage the front tires or is it always "on"? What changes when I switch it to 4HI? Sometimes when I accelerate on ice, the back end will slide out like a 2WD would and other times the truck hooks up on the ice like its in 4HI.

I don't have any problems with it, just a curiosity thing I guess.

If I recall correctly, switching to 4hi simply locks the center differential. The normal AWD allows some "give" so you can turn without binding.

That sounds right to me John M...

While we're asking curious question, then, does anyone know if there's a particular speed recommended to stay under when switching into 4WD?

Generally I've never switched when I'm going more than 40mph, but does this matter? Any thoughts?

I've always thougth that as long as the front tires weren't spinning at a different speed than the back ones, you could do it up until 80kph (50mph).

Thanks for the info on AWD

I had a question about this also.

The *** on my Ram is set to AWD. Does this meanthe Ram is All Wheel-Drive all the time? Is it even possible to drive in 2WD?
