Which to pick Auburn/Trutrac
Im starting to save up and plan for a LSD install to prevent the catastrophic failure that is imminent. I hear good things about both but it seems like most have the auburn. Im concerned about things wearing out with the Auburn but have no real experience with either. I drive in snow occassionally and may find some thin mud but largely for street use.
And the all important fact.... what is the cheapest place to get each one? Installation of both requires just hand tools and doesnt affect the R&P settings at all correct??
Thanks

well it involves a little more then hand tools to do it right...if it was me, then i would go with the TruTrac simply for the fact that it's all gears and theres no clutches that will wear out....I have the auburn unit and i love it, but if i did it over again the TruTrac would be my choice....i got mine from moesperformance.com, but i've seen em on 4wheelparts and some other sites as well.....wait around and there will be some more to throw in some more info
I decided on the trutrac, they are all mechanical, and i have a few friends that have had them for 100,000 plus and they still work great.
It's a little more in depth that hand tools and the driveway. unless you have a good understanding of what your doing, take it too a shop.

I plan to have a mech friend put it in for me. He does the stuff in his spare time but is very good. I would do it myself but for something as vital as a rear end i want it done right.
I just wanted to verify he didnt need special tools or that the backlash and gears were left alone.
I am also leaning to the TrueTrac... but they seem more expensive than the Auburn which was 387 at 4wheelparts.. havent found a cheap price on the Truetrack yet

I think the detroits are priced a little more, 50 bucks or so...
Yeah, the preload and backlash stay the same. Were just making sure you werent getting in over your head on somethng like that. Glad to hear you have a mech helping you.

like yourself i wanted the trutrac, but didn't want to pay the price for something i didn't really need. if i did a lot of off road i would have spent the money, but the way i figured it i would prolly get a new truck before i wore out my auburn. did mine this past summer and so far it's great. no complaints about my auburn.
oh yeah the price. i think that is a pretty good price for the auburn. i got my auburn newfor 300 on ebay. the trutracs, at the time, were going for 450-500.

I love my Auburn, i would never go with a tru trac after using the Auburn. I have hammered on this thing and it still functions like it did from day one. Either will be a good pick but from my experiences I have to recommend the Auburn.

I have the Auburn and have had an Auburn for over 100k miles in a previous truck and it still performed like it did on day one. I don't know long it takes to "wear one out" as the TruTrac fans like to claim, but at under $400 if you can get 100k + miles out of it, I don't think wear is an issue. Although to be honest, all the guys with the TruTracs love theirs too. So, basically, I don't think you could go wrong with either...
Yeah I have the Auburn due to lack of funds...however, I've noticed that the Auburn hasnt run itself down at all so far....I don't think that it is as good as the trutrac but it definetely holds its own
